Vogue Britannica Issue

“In February 1951, Vogue launched a special issue called ‘Britannica’ that was repeated each February for the following two years, taking British from the Festival of Britain up to the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. As its title suggests, the issue looked explicitly at Britishness – celebrating post-war British style and culture, and, as ever, both its ability to re-imagine old traditions and embrace the new. [..]

The coronation colour was named: Champagne Pink! It was to feature again and again as the colour celebrating the English Rose, Princess Elizabeth.”

A week today Britain is going to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee and London has never felt so festive (ok, I take that back, it seemed like the whole nation was breathing just to see the Royal Wedding). Selfridges has launched an exhibition showcasing some of the most desirable styles worn by the Queen’s contemporaries between 1951 and 1953, recreating key looks from this period in their entirety. Very glamorous and British indeed.

“Laikā no 1951. līdz 1953. gadam, ik februāri Vogue izlaida īpašu numuru ar nosaukumu ‘Britannica’. Kā jau nosaukums saka priekšā, Britannica bija izteikti britu-orientēts numurs, kurš izcēla pēckara britu stilu un kultūru, un galvenokārt – spēju pār-radīt vecās tradīcijas un svinēt visu jauno. [..]

“Šampanieša rozā krāsa” tika izvēlēta kā tā laika modīgākā krāsa, kuru atkal un atkal izmantoja attēlos, kuros godināja Anglijas Rozi, Princesi Elizabeti.”

Tieši pēc nedēļas visā Apvienotajā Karalistē tiks svinēta Viņas Majestātes Dimanta Jubileja un Londona vēl nekad nav likusies tik ļoti sagatavojusies svētkiem (Ok, ņemu savus vārdus atpakaļ, šķiet, ka visas nācijas dzīves mērķis reiz bija piedzīvot Karaliskās Kāzas). Selfridges ir atklājis izstādi, kurā atrāda dažus ikoniskākos apģērba stilus, kurus no 1951. līdz 1953. gadam nēsāja tā laika modīgākās dāmas. Nudien Britiski un pievilcīgi.
